The Chief Executive Officer of the Higher Education Student Loans Board (HESLB), Dr. Bill Kiwia, engaged in discussions with Ms. Leyla Baghirzade, the Chief Executive Officer of the Swiss Alternative Financing (SAFAG) institution, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.The goal of their conversation? To start a dialogue to strengthen the sources of funding for higher education in Tanzania.

The meeting, which occurred on Friday, February 09, 2024,that took place inside the HESLB offices in the TAZARA area in Dar es Salaam. SAFAG, a financial institution with a mission to connect investors with funds from Europe, and various institutions or organizations, took center stage in discussions. The main goal was clear:to address the various challenges facing educational institutions in obtaining sustainable funding.

During this critical meeting, Dr. Kiwia emphasized the ongoing efforts of the government to support higher education. He highlighted the annual increase in the student loan budget as a strategic move to broaden the reach of higher education loans facilitated through HESLB. “At present, the government, through HESLB, funds approximately 70% of all higher education students, with funds exclusively sourced from the Ministry of Finance. Hence, collaboration with various stakeholders, including SAFAG, is deemed crucial,” emphasized Dr. Kiwia.
